Helen Conrad (née Korchevsky) age 92, died of natural causes on April 20, 2016, in the Kennedy Health Care Center in Sewell, New Jersey, after surviving a heart attack in July 2015.
She is survived by her children: Carol of Sarasota, Florida, David of Somerville, New Jersey and William (spouse Incigül), of Le Vésinet, France, and William’s children (Helen’s grandchildren) Cynthia and Richard. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence H. Conrad, Jr. (who taught English at Glassboro State College, now Rowan University), her sister Eugenia Todd, her mother Mary Korchevsky, and her father Joseph Korchevsky.
Helen was born on September 10, 1923 in Newark, New Jersey, to parents Mary and Joseph Korchevsky. She graduated from Montclair State Teachers College with a BA in Spanish, and from Columbia Teachers College with a Masters in teaching Spanish. She had an avid interest in languages, and in addition to English, spoke fluent Polish, French, and Spanish. She married Lawrence H. Conrad, Jr. in 1949.
In 1957, she moved to Glassboro, New Jersey, where she lived for the rest of her life. In the 1960s she had a part-time job as a foreign languages librarian at Savitz Library at Glassboro State College (now Rowan University). She also taught English to migrant workers in South Jersey in the 1960s. In the 1970s she taught Spanish for Medical Personnel at Gloucester County College.
She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses since the 1970s. She was very active and involved in the evangelizing work that the Witnesses are known for, even during her remaining years.
A memorial service, arranged by the Glassboro congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, will take place on April 27, 2016 at 7:00 pm, at the Glassboro Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 3060 Glassboro Cross Keys Rd, Glassboro, NJ 08028. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
